Common flat lap accessories include diamond grinding discs in stepped grits, polishing pads, magnetic or adhesive backing plates, water-feed and drip kits, and replacement laps. The right set depends on whether you are grinding, smoothing, or doing a final polish.

Build a progression: a coarse disc around 60 to 100 for shaping, medium grits 220 to 600 to remove scratches, then fine 1200 to 3000 for polish. Each grit removes the prior one's marks, so a stepped set gives a clean, haze-free finish.

Many do. A magnetic or rubberized backing plate lets you swap diamond discs quickly on the metal head of your grinder without adhesive. Confirm the disc and your machine head are compatible in size and backing type before ordering.

Not always. Disc diameter and arbor or backing style must match your specific flat lap, since 6 inch, 8 inch, and larger heads differ. Check your machine's head size and mounting before buying discs or backing plates to be sure they fit.

Lifespan depends on use, material, and water cooling. Diamond discs wear gradually and cut slower as they age, especially without consistent water. Coarser discs tend to wear faster under heavy shaping. Keep them flushed with water and replace when cutting speed drops.
